Senior AI/ML Cybersecurity Researcher

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior AI/ML Cybersecurity Researcher to work in our Cyber R&D department. Our team works a 9×80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off.

The Senior AI/ML Cybersecurity Research Team Lead shall serve as a driving force behind the AI/ML security infrastructure research and serve as a technical team lead. The team is comprised of accomplished data scientists to craft advanced threat detection models. You will be a technical expert mentoring other staff and report to the manager over Information & Cyber Research Security.

Responsibilities Include:

 

  • Architect and implement AI/ML algorithms for proactive threat detection, analysis, and response across operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) networks.
  • Integrate AI/ML solutions into existing Splunk workflows and security infrastructure, maximizing effectiveness.
  • Evaluate and refine AI/ML models, ensuring performance and accuracy.
  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing by developing and delivering engaging training materials for your team.
  • Provide technical guidance to peers and junior researchers in developing technical solutions for information operations and analysis related to national security topics including intrusion analysis, systems and vulnerabilities, network security, advanced analytic tools and data visualization techniques and other areas.
  • Theorizes, organizes and participates in the conceptualization and development of custom code used to analyze network traffic and proprietary protocols to detect anomalous and malicious traffic.
  • Work with program and technical staff to conduct technical task assignments, and can review progress and evaluate results.
  • Lead by example through mentoring peers and establishing an environment of safety, teamwork and integrity while promoting research excellence, inclusivity, and empowering ownership through innovation.
  • Contribute to the great INL organization’s overall cyber AI/ML strategy, shaping the future of our security posture.
  • Supervise and participate in project teams to produce proposals for new work including joint projects with industry.
  • Provide direct mentoring, assistance and support to junior staff in their technical growth.

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • PR0300 – 13 years experience, or BS plus 5 years, or MS plus 3 years
  • PR0400 – 16 years experience, or BS plus 8 years, or MS plus 6
  • High proficiency AI/ML frameworks, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
  • 4+ years of experience applying AI/ML to cybersecurity network traffic or related domains.
  • Proficient in Splunk (Search Processing Language, dashboards, alerts, integrations).
  • Advanced understanding of AI/ML algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Experience with Agile Methodology for software development.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

  • PR0300 – 240 ($143,124 – $243,312) OR PR0400 – 250 ($164,616 – $279,816)

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
