Head of Data and AI Ethics

We’re seeking an experienced Head of Data & AI Ethics to join our Chief Data and Analytics Office in our newly created AI centre of Excellence who will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the bank’s Ethical AI policies and practices. This role is essential in ensuring the bank operates with integrity, transparency, and in accordance with regulatory and societal expectations!

You’ll take ownership for a highly specialist team of AI and Ethics experts, developing and leading the Banks AI Ethics strategy, ensuring alignment with the overall AI, Data and Group Technology strategy. You’ll be expected to act as a transformative leader, with a strong vision, promoting a culture of safe and ethical AI throughout the organisation, providing thought leadership, and advising senior leaders, our executives and the Board on Ethical issues, standards and responsible AI tooling.

You’ll be leading the development and embedding of Group-wide ethical AI frameworks including the AI assurance framework, backed by a cohesive set of reusable patterns, tooling, controls and guardrails that support in the delivery of safe, ethical and well governed Data & AI solutions. Delivery will be lead in collaboration with teams across the AI CoE and in partnership with our Model Governance, Platform, Technology and Architecture teams.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in AI, AI Ethics or a related field or equivalent, significant industry experience working in a technical data role.
  • Leadership level experience of embedding Data Ethics standards, tooling, and ethical data use framework in large complex organisations. Building and mentoring chapters of domain experts, developing talent and advancing team members towards their career objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of analytics, data science and AI and Generative AI. This knowledge should be grounded in practical application.
  • Deep understanding of emergent Ethical risks particular with Generative AI and how to mitigate through tooling, policy and procedures.
  • Understanding of other emerging technologies that impact Data Ethics best practices.
  • A good understanding of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and the Responsible AI tooling available on GCP / VertexAI.
  • Experience building Ethical AI controls and embedding them into broader Model risk management frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and inspire at all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • High level of integrity, with a commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards.
  • Expert knowledge of technology vendors to help select partners to help deliver our strategy.
  • Confident relationship manager able to influence senior partners and course correcting initiatives towards strategic outcomes.
  • Established knowledge of how data can support customers and delivery out Groups objectives.
  • Ability to make complicated technological concepts simple to senior audiences.
