Oceans AI Developer
The Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System ( CIOOS ) is undertaking a project approach to accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the ocean sector, with a focus on connecting organizations in the ocean sector with the tools and information necessary to understand and implement the opportunities offered by AI. As a nationally coordinated effort towards an open access and online platform for sharing high quality data and information about the state of our oceans, CIOOS provides a solid foundation on which to advance the objectives of this project. Job Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director of CIOOS Atlantic, the Oceans AI Developer will be responsible for the development and delivery of an artificial intelligence model which expedites the data management process: to simplify, optimize, and automate those tasks which are typically manual and resource intensive. The Oceans AI Developer will focus on the application of artificial intelligence to ocean data, using the approach “adopt where possible, adapt when necessary, and develop as a last resort.”
Key Responsibilities:
- Research challenges and emerging trends for the use of AI in data management.
- Identify and process relevant datasets to develop, train, and validate the model.
- Build, train, and operationalize the model using appropriate algorithms and techniques.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate solutions into existing systems.
- Create, maintain, and publish comprehensive documentation to the CIOOS Atlantic GitHub.
- Additional AI-related responsibilities that may arise as the project progresses.
Note:
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Evening and weekend work may be required on an occasional basis to meet operational requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in a related field with a minimum of 1 year of related experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to be a team player and to adapt to changing situations and requirements.
Assets:
- Experience with the ocean sector and with data management.
