Senior Specialist, Data and AI Governance

We are looking for a Senior Specialist, Data & AI Governance who will maintain overarching responsibility for the strategic management of Cenovus’s data assets to support corporate objectives and operational excellence. This senior-level position with Data and Information Technology (D & IT) encompasses a broad range of duties, requiring a balance of technical acumen, managerial expertise, and a deep understanding of data governance practices.

As a steward of the company’s data assets, this role will also possess budgetary oversight and control, aligning spending with strategic objectives and ensuring the cost-effective delivery of data governance initiatives. This individual will report on the department’s performance, offering insights and updates to executive leadership.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Data Governance team, ensuring efficient handling of requests and adherence to internal processes.
  • Carry out internal data controls, and handle data access through established methods to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Drive data literacy and training initiatives across the organization to cultivate a culture of data-driven decision-making.
  • Lead enterprise data quality and master data management strategies, incorporating data profiling, cleansing.
  • Collaborate with various business units to engage data consumers, stewards, and owners.
  • Extend governance policies and practices to encompass non-structured data, handling the organization’s email, document, and content management systems, as well as records management to ensure compliance with data governance standards.
  • Provide leadership in the governance of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) initiatives.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or equivalent advanced certification (e.g., CPA, CIPM, PMP) is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in data governance or a related field, with at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role within a large, complex organization, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
  • Consistent track record leading multi-disciplinary teams, inclusive of setting priorities, allocating resources, and driving deliverables to completion.
  • Strong expertise in dealing with structured and non-structured data, data quality tools, master data management systems, and data governance platforms.
  • Experience in overseeing AI/ML governance including the development and sustainment of advanced analytics solutions.
  • Demonstrable ability to develop and manage significant departmental budgets, with a keen insight into investment in technology, training, and process improvements to enhance return on data assets.
  • Solid understanding of information management practices, business and data analytics, and the nuances of data security, privacy, and compliance frameworks such as SOX.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to convey complex data governance concepts to a variety of audiences, including the propensity to communicate organizational data success stories compellingly.
  • Capacity to build collaborative partnerships across IT and business units, and ability to influence and align enterprise-wide initiatives with strategic business objectives.
