About The Role:

Opentrons is building an Innovation Program and looking for senior scientists that will lead the charge on some world changing projects! The right person for this role will be comfortable beginning the early investigation stages of the programs very hands on structuring our approaches and directly working on early prototypes, then transitioning to program lead as programs develop and gain momentum. This is a dynamic role, with significant opportunity and expectation to touch many portions of the business and collaborate with partners in product management, engineering, science and our subsidiaries.

The Staff Robotics Scientist reports directly to the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO).

What You Will Do:

  • Leverage machine learning, computer vision, and other perception & cognition approaches to further extend the capabilities of our systems
  • Leads large multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary R&D programs within the budgetary and calendar constraints, while delivering business-critical results
  • Works with other stakeholders to build business cases and project proposals and plans
  • Coordinates the management and filing of IP related to the projects and programs they are running
  • Manages transfer to product engineering and coordinates consultation from the Innovation group to the engineering efforts moving forward
  • Publishes papers related to our work and products and evangelizes Opentrons to the industry at large

Who We Are Looking For:

Education:

  • Master’s degree (required) or PhD (preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or other relevant field

Experience:

  • 10+ years developing early technology, or 5 years with PhD
  • 5+ years of experience in life science instrumentation and/or lab automation/robotics
  • Preferred minimum 3 years in start-up or scale-up environment
  • Preferred minimum 2 years in structured R&D or corporate research environment
  • Proven track record of taking new products from concept through design and into manufacturing
  • Experience working with multiple kinds of stakeholders and navigating uncertainty
  • Experience building development programs with multiple stakeholders and navigating technology development in a fast paced, startup culture
  • Experience working with Product Management & multidisciplinary teams to define success criteria and meet performance targets

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Deep knowledge of adjacent fields, including optimization, heuristic search, and deep learning
  • Knowledge of analysis tools such as Python or Matlab
  • Proficient in background research
  • Proficient in project & program management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication & presentation skills
  • Excellent time and budget management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $190,000 and $235,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
